91³Ô¹Ï recently welcomed acclaimed Italian science fiction author and editorÌýFrancesco VersoÌýfor an engaging lecture and discussion titledÌý"Solarpunk: New Seeds from the Ashes of the Future."ÌýThe event explored Solarpunk - an emerging subgenre of speculative fiction that envisions optimistic, ecologically balanced futures - as a compelling framework for reimagining global food systems.

Verso, a multiple-time winner of the prestigious Premio Urania and one of Italy’s leading voices in science fiction, introduced Solarpunk as both a literary movement and a social philosophy. In contrast to the dystopian themes often found in cyberpunk, Solarpunk foregrounds collective resilience, renewable energy, circular economies, and inclusive governance. It offers a vision of the future that prioritizes environmental stewardship, technological harmony, and social justice—with a particular emphasis on sustainable agriculture and equitable food systems.

The talk was followed by a lively and thoughtful debate between Verso and 91³Ô¹Ï students, who explored the potential of Solarpunk principles to inspire real-world innovations in food sustainability. Discussions ranged from vertical farming and permaculture to the ethical use of agri-tech and the role of female leadership in future food narratives. Students brought their diverse academic perspectives to bear on the conversation, creating a rich and interdisciplinary exchange of ideas.
